From Wednesday 24th August to Tuesday 13th September, Devonshire Square will be proudly hosting in its Pop-Up Art Studio ‘Unfurling the Past into the Future’, a FREE to attend visual art exhibition by award winning artist Jonathan Roson.
Born in Australia, of Asian cultural heritage, Jonathan Roson graduated with a Master of Fine Arts at UNSW Art and Design in 2007 and is currently a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors, as well as co-founder of the successful artist collective Alice in Hackneyland.
The artist utilises recycled wood sourced from construction sites in the greater London area to create his imaginative and thought-provoking sculptures. His current body of work consists of sculptural objects made from timber, some of which are stained black, all resulting from a fully sustainable creative process.
“I choose to work with wood because of its history and its innate qualities (splits, cracks, knots & grain).” – Roson explains – “These qualities inspire an empathetic dialogue with the material, and thus guide the development of my sculptures. Through the reductive process of carving, I cut away the layers of the timber in order to reconstruct it to reveal a new form, that is charged with its own life, and is intended to resonate with the viewer’s own emotions and feelings.”
Jonathan Roson is presented by Parallel, an artist led platform who is collaborating with DSQ to bring critically engaging pop-up exhibitions with purpose, focusing on enhancing narrative, aesthetic and historical value, with the aim of stimulating dialogue and creativity within our diverse communities.
Parallel believes creating a culture for growth and experimentation is vital and supporting the planet and people that unify us is paramount in today’s society, and key for a relevant and sustainable future.
Parallel gives 15% of all proceeds to the causes that connect with their artists most, and Jonathan’s chosen charity for this exhibition is the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.
Devonshire Square will be encouraging online donations in aid of the charity for the whole duration of the exhibition and will be hosting – in parallel with the exhibition – a curated programme of lunchtime piano concerts, ‘Music for hope’, with performances executed by young talented pianist and composers, taking place every Wednesday, from 1pm to 2pm, in its Western Courtyard, to raise awareness of the DEC Ukraine humanitarian appeal.
The exhibition will be open to the public from Monday to Friday, from 11am to 8pm, and a private viewing with welcoming drinks and a ‘meet the artist’ session, as well as a performance, will take place on 31st August, from 6pm to 9pm.
